The amazing Ghanaian cultural troupe Afrikania featuring renowned Ewe Master Drummer Torgbui Midawo Gideon Alorwoyie, widely regarded as one of Ghanas foremost virtuosos of traditional music and dance, will be touring the Central Kentucky region from Monday, April 16, through Sunday April 22. There are several remaining openings in their schedule for this tour and we welcome any performance or workshop inquiries from schools, churches and other organizations interested in presenting a high quality experience of traditional African drumming and dance culture.

Afrikania
Formed in 1999 under the leadership of Albert Alaska Azameti, Afrikania is fully dedicated to the preservation of ritual music and dance as well as the general culture of Ewe, Anlo speaking people of Ghana. It has over the years swayed audiences in Ghana and beyond with traditional music/dance from Ghana, Togo and Benin.
With the coordination of George Dzikunu, an accomplished performer and former director of Adzido Pan African Dance Ensemble, a group based in the UK, Afrikania Cultural Troupe has held diverse workshops and training programmes in traditional music and dance for foreign students and teachers from several countries |
Gideon Alorwoyie
Highly regarded as one of Ghana's foremost virtuosos of traditional music and dance, master drummer Alorwoyie will lead the Afrikania ensemble in music of the Ewe, Dagbamba, and other cultural groups in Ghana. The Afrikania Cultural Troupe features drummers and dancers from Ghana performing on traditional drums and percussion.
Alorwoyie is from Anlo-Afiadenyigba in the Volta Region of Ghana, West Africa and is highly regarded as one of Ghana”s foremost virtuosos of traditional music and dance. He is currently associate professor of music, principal dancer/choreographer and Director of the UNT African Percussion Ensemble since joining the College of Music faculty in 1996.
Professor Alorwoyie is also a traditional chief from his native area and a member of Afife Traditional Area in the Volta Region of Ghana, is a wonderful musician, a superb dancer and has command of a vast repertoire of traditional musical instruments. He is a virtuoso instrumentalist who has expanded the range of traditional African drumming and possesses extraordinary control of tonal inflection over a wide dynamic range. When he performs, one senses his total command of the medium.
